Author Christina Laun

Provided by Kelly Sonora at http://www.mastersincriminaljustice.com

With the advent of online tools that make it easy to share information, meet new people and keep in touch faster than ever, reputation has taken on a twofold dimension. Individuals and businesses no longer have to worry about their reputation in real life but in the virtual world as well, making it twice as hard to keep up with what’s being said. There are some ways that you can work to manage your online reputation, however, whether you’re doing it for yourself or for your business. These resources provide tips and tools to make it easier to track, control and manage your online reputation so you stay on top and in control of your personal and professional image.

Tips

Here are some general tips to consider when managing your online reputation.

Create official online profiles. Don’t let just anyone talk about you online. Create your own profiles and websites complete with the kind of information you actually want to be available about you.

Check what people are saying about you online. Whether good or bad you can do yourself a favor by finding out just what is being said about you online. Use some of the tools mentioned later in this article to keep yourself in the loop.

Stay on the ball. Don’t get lazy about monitoring your reputation. If necessary, perform monthly checks to see if there’s any information about you that could be potentially harmful.

Google yourself. The simplest way to find out where your or your company’s online reputation stands is to Google yourself. See what kind of results pop up first. If they aren’t what they’d like them to be, you’ve got some work to do.

Assume everything can get on the web. Both in your personal and professional life, what you say online and off can come back to bite you. Be safe and assume any emails, conversations or photos out there can eventually end up on the Web.

Choose your words carefully. If you are blogging, running a website or just have a social media profile, be careful what you post. Unless you’re looking for controversy what you say may cause you problems in the future.

Know your weaknesses. If you know your business has a particular weakness or are just familiar with your propensity for getting wild on the weekend, keep this in mind and have it as your top priority for checking on your online reputation.

Protect yourself from hackers. This may seem like it goes without saying, but many people fail to adequately secure their online information. Make sure yours is as safe as it possibly can be.

Keep social networks private. One way to deter prying eyes is to keep your social networking profiles private to all except those you approve. This will keep casual viewers from seeing your information, good or bad.

Consider pseudonyms. If you do want to keep a blog or engage in hijinks on internet message boards, create a name for yourself to hide behind so you can’t be easily tracked.

Be proactive. Instead of waiting until you have an issue with your online reputation, stay ahead of the game. Search for what’s being said about you regularly so you’ll stay up-to-date.

Act fast. If you do find something said or posted about you online that you feel could be particularly damaging to you, take action immediately. Whether its your friend posting photos from your Vegas trip or someone you don’t know slandering your business, taking care of it sooner rather than later is best.

Keep your cool. You may be incensed at what someone has said about you online, but don’t let it show. Keep your anger to yourself and off the internet where it can do more harm than good.

Author: Dustin Woodard

Online reputation management is increasingly important as more and more friends, family and employers search your name. Even if you are always on your best behavior online or you have a fairly unique name, as the population swells and more people become creators of content on the web, there’s a great chance that people will mistake others activity online as your own!

Controlling or managing search rank for your own name is fairly easy for an SEO (search engine optimizer), but what can the average person do? Below I outline a number of free, quick, easy and effective ways to populate the first page of results for your name. I highly recommend people start creating content for their name now as it will be much more difficult after waiting for someone else with your name to muddy the search results to spur you to action.

1) Create a Blog Even if you build just a one-page site using your name on a free blog network, you can quickly use your blog to create pages about yourself and link to other pages you are going to create on this list. Use your name in the blog name. Estimated time to complete: 10 minutes Free Options: Blogger (blogspot), WordPress, LiveJournal

2) Create a Wiki Several wiki platforms have done a great job of creating publishing tools that are even easier to use than most blog technology. Though wikis are best suited for group collaboration, the will also work well helping you link to your blog and other pages. Use your name in the wiki name. Estimated time to complete: 10 minutes Free Options: Wetpaint, Wikia Wikia

3) Register your domain If you are lucky enough to have [insertyourname].com (or .net, .org, .info) available, snatch them up. The $8 a year fee is well worth it even if you don’t actively build a site using it because, at the very least, you are preventing your competition (other people with your name, or people who don’t like you) from ranking high for your name. Even better, use your domain for the site or wiki you are going to create. Estimated time to complete: 5 minutes Cheap Options: GoDaddy, Yahoo, 1&1

4) LinkedIn Set up a LinkedIn profile and make it publicly available. Add background info like education, employment history, awards or certification (or anything else you are proud of). Add links to your other sites/pages. Estimated time to complete: 5-10 minutes

5) Jobster Some people are a little shocked when they find out their profile shows up in search. Not you, because you want it to! Create a jobster account, allow it to be publicly available, fill out a little employment info, answer a couple questions, but write it keeping in mind that your current employer could come across it. Estimated time to complete: 5 minutes

6) Myspace pages tend to show up in search as well. Though Myspace has probably ruined more people’s reputations than helped, you will create a clean Myspace page for your name and, if you feel the urge, put the racy stuff on a different profile. Estimated time to complete: 5 minutes

7) Flickr accounts and images have a great chance of showing up in the engines, especially for image searches. Creat an account, upload a few photos you like and label them with your name. Estimated time to complete: 10 minutes

Comment on Popular Post Sometimes I see a commenter’s name show up in search. Find a popular blogger site or newspaper site that allows comments, and find a post that you feel comfortable commenting on. Use your real name for the name field. Try this on a couple sites. Estimated time to complete: 5 minutes

9) Employer Site If your employer features profiles on their website, ask them to add one for you. If not, talk them into it or author a post on their blog (if they have one). Estimated time to complete: 5-30 minutes, depending on your company

10) Join a Forum Do a search for a forum that you might want to participate on. For example, if you are into guitar, you should search for “guitar forum.” If it looks like a place where it would be easy for you to make five or six posts, then sign up and use your name for your profile name. Make your five posts and fill out your profile page with information about you and use your name at least once in the profile description. Estimated time to complete: 15 minutes

*Disclosure: I work for Wetpaint, but honestly believe their wiki solution is the best option

In the future, Facebook might also be an option. They recently allowed profiles set to public to be crawled, but they are showing logged-out status of your profile, which is basically your name and picture right now. Eventually, I believe, Facebook will open it up to show your full public profile (probably in ‘08).

Keep in mind, Google usually only shows two results for any one site. That’s why I have you contributing on multiple sites. A couple more tips:

If you ever receive a great interview or bio online, link to it from your sites.

For online activity that you don’t want to be associated with your name, use a nickname or “handle” that is completely different from your real name.

If you have stiffer competition for your name, you may need to spend more time building out and linking to the various options I list above.

Other options:

a) Wikipedia If you have a strong brand you can list your company in the Wikipedia online encyclopedia. Estimated time to complete: 30-45 minutes, depending on your company

b) Press Releases Press releases do well in news search, and if you point a few links at them it could also help them outrank other pages. PRWeb is popular. Estimated time to complete: 30-45 minutes, depending on your company

c) Writing Articles This is another easy way to create content that is highly relevant to your brand or name at places like Article City. Estimated time to complete: 60 minutes, depending on your company

Please email recommendations to improve this page.

Definition of Defamation:
Defamation refers to the unconsented and unprivileged publications of a false idea whichtends to injure reputation.

Defamation is the aftermath of the following:

Slander:
It is oral defamation. It is injurious defamation by spoken words or by looks, signs, or gestures. Slander is also known as calumny.

Libel:
It is written defamation. It is malicious defamatory publication or statement. A person can be sued for defamation if he deliberately publishes the false idea that injures
reputation.

Publication:
Publication is the unconsented intentional or negligent communication of defamatory matter to a third parry. Publication includes any means of communication by which a third party actually receives the defamatory message. If you accuse a person privately of a fraud or incompetence you have no legal consequences. But if this accusation is made in front of a third person who is not privileged you may be subject to legal action.

Libellous and slanderous statements both are subject to legal action. Since libellous statements are more permanent, laws about libel are more severe than those about slander. Libellous communication Includes a letter, circular, picture, photograph, recorded tape, cartoon, news paper or phonograph record. Accidental communications to third persons, such as eavesdroppers or unauthorized letter readers, are not actionable.

WASHINGTON –– A new breed of image-manager is emerging in the United States to take on the masked and hooded cybermobs who, bolstered by anonymity and weak laws, launch damaging attacks on other web users.

“We are seeing online mobs emerge and launch attacks… with significant consequences, both to the people online and to their reputation offline,” University of Maryland law professor Danielle Citron told AFP.

The anonymity afforded by the Internet “gives people a kind of strength to be much harsher than they would be in person,” Georgetown University sociology professor, and co-founder of International Reputation Management (IRM) Christine Schiwietz said.

Reputation managers step in where the law has failed, to provide “digital botox” to names in need of repair, as Schiwietz put it. A group of women law students at prestigious Yale University who were attacked online, in what has come to be known as the Auto-Admit scandal, have taken on the services of reputation management group, Reputation Defender.

“Auto-Admit was ostensibly a site for getting advice about going to law school, but it degenerated into attacks on named women who were accused of having herpes, having abortions. They got rape threats, death threats,” said Citron.

In a posting made last year, and which remains on the web and AFP was able to see, one of the students was called a whore and had lewd references made to her anatomy by numerous assailants who hid behind bogus pseudonyms such as Marty Lipton King Jr.

Anonymity and strength in numbers are fueling the online attacks.

“Five years ago, you had to create a website to get information on the Internet. That site could be traced to an IP address and there was some accountability,” Nino Kader of IRM said.

“But Google owns blogs created on blogger.com. So there is a lack of accountability and that is one reason why people are getting pretty malicious out there,” he said.

Citron likened vicious cyber-mobs to the mob mentality of the Ku Klux Klan.

“If you’re in a crowd where people hold the same negative view as you, and you feel anonymous, you’re going to do things you would never dream of doing if you had no mask and hood on,” Citron said.

The guy who wrote that the American frontier closed more than 100 years ago — he’s a five-star moron.

The frontier’s still wide open. We just changed its name to the Internet.

Maybe the most freewheeling territory in cyberspace is consumer review websites such as Yelp, where customers rate sushi joints and endodontists and churches.

Sometimes they post assessments as dry and sober as a temperance newsletter. Sometimes they try to channel Jonathan Gold, like the laconic diner who wrote of my favorite pizza hangout, “‘It’s good pizza … don’t expect to be born again or anything.” And sometimes they bring knives and guns. A foodie slagged the chef at an Italian restaurant in Vegas as a “ghetto guido.”

The push-back was inevitable. A recent nudge came from San Francisco. On Yelp, a man detailed a billing dispute with his chiropractor, then concluded that he’d found a “better, honest chiropractor.” His first chiropractor asked the patient to remove the review for “unjustly” characterizing him as “unethical and dishonest.” The patient refused, the chiropractor got a lawyer, the patient did take down the post, but the chiropractor sued anyway.

Since then, a Foster City dentist sued a couple over their Yelp slam of her treatment of their son. This time, Yelp itself took down the post. On the East Coast, drug makers in an investor lawsuit want to bar comments on a site called CafePharma. The site, so the lawyers say, is “literally the cyberspace equivalent of scrawls left on a men’s room wall.”

Here’s the deal with the Wild West frontier, then and now: You’re on your own. No sheriff, no “big media” filter to protect you, not even from yourself.

The Communications Decency Act of 1996 effectively took most website operators off the hook. The act says websites aren’t publishers and are not responsible for what people put on their sites, which is why the chiropractor didn’t sue Yelp.

Thomas R. Burke is a 1st Amendment lawyer in San Francisco. “People routinely write comments online that they’d never dare say in person,” he said, “but that doesn’t make them any less protected under the 1st Amendment. Expressions of opinion are protected, and, ironically, the more ‘over the top’ the comment, the more it may be protected as opinion.”

Opinion is free speech, but there are legal limits even to that, and not just shouting “fire” in a theater that isn’t aflame. It may have been “the worst meal” you ever had — but post, “This restaurant is so bad, I know it’s a front for criminal money-laundering,” and that’s heading toward libel (unless it’s true), and you may hear from a lawyer.

The waters just got deeper. The grass-roots consumer rating operation, the Zagat Survey, has agreed to work with insurer WellPoint Inc. to let consumers rate doctors.

Dr. Dev GnanaDev loves Zagat — wouldn’t dine without it — but as head of the California Medical Assn., he thinks it’s a terrible way to evaluate doctors. “It’s basically a complaint form,” he said, not an informed analysis of care. And if it’s driven by vox populi on medical peripherals — how old the waiting-room magazines are or how good the parking is — you could wind up not with the best physician but with “American Idol, MD.”

The chiropractor-versus-reviewer suit was settled out of court, which is a shame because we need public precedents to give us a legal compass on all this. Andrew Keen’s “The Cult of the Amateur” made him the scold of cyberspace culture. Said Keen: “I think it’s very healthy that this person is being sued. I think people have to be accountable, and the Internet is where most people think they can say anything and not be accountable or responsible.” To enforce accountability, there is “no other alternative apart from the law courts.”

As that implies, Keen is in favor of a substantive remedy. Shouldn’t the Internet self-correct before government big-footers step on freebooters’ cyberspace, I asked meekly. Keen bristled: “I don’t see anything wrong with regulation. We have regulation in other avenues of society.

“The Internet is just another kind of society, and societies all operate under rights and responsibilities; Internet people operate purely on the basis of rights without responsibility.”

Take away the anonymity of the Internet, he believes, and “a lot of the other problems would fall into place.”

So maybe I should take back that thing I said about Frederick Jackson Turner being a moron for saying the frontier is gone. Maybe even the cyberspace version will disappear.

But I don’t have to give up my dream of being a tough, edgy Internet poster yet. “Paper Shredder” — it’s a persona that’s everything I’ve always wanted to be: bold, slashing — and anonymous.

What brand is all about?

Though many things are considered to be part of a brand, a brand is essentially the perception of the customers towards a product. This perception is much more important than the tangible attributes that are commonly associated to a brand, like the name, logo, packaging and things that symbolically represent a product. The perception of the users is responsible for the equity of a brand or a brand value.

How exactly brands help to sell?
According to Davis Aaker, the Vice Chairman of Prophet, creator of the Aaker Model™, and an eminent teacher and writer on branding and marketing, brands have equity because they have high awareness, many loyal customers, and a high reputation for perceived quality. It is a general trend that consumers prefer high-equity brands because they find it easier to interpret what benefits the brand offers, feel more confident of it and get more satisfaction from using it. This brand equity or perception about a product cannot be developed overnight. It takes considerable amount of time and conscious efforts to establish a brand in the consumers’ psyche.

Why it’s a different ball game when it comes to World Wide Web?
Advertising and other marketing efforts are the most widely used mediums for establishing a brand and building brand value. Much like the conventional process of brand building, online business or e-commerce is also heavily dependent on advertising and online marketing campaigns.

Why search engines are so important for online brand building?
As major portion the online buyers depend on the search engine results to find the product or services they are looking for, search engines are undoubtedly the most powerful medium for building a brand in the online business.

According to a recent study, 62% of search engine users look no further than the first page of the search results and 90% of them do not go beyond the first three pages of the search engine result to select a site for making purchase. Moreover, 36% of search engine users believe that the top ranking companies at the search engine result pages are top companies in that respective industry.

How does SEO benefit the online brand building process?

Be at the top - It quite evident that if you are looking to build a brand at the World Wide Web, your site must feature at the top result pages of the leading search engine and most likely in the first result page itself. It will not only guarantee increase of traffic to your site but also effectively build your brand image . Being at the same platform with biggest names in your industry will surely increase your brand value.

Leverage from your ranking - With the top ranking at the leading search engines, it is quite evident that traffic to your site will significantly increase. The best part of this traffic is that most of them are pre-qualified customers and hence major part of these leads will convert in sales. So, with a search engine ranking your customer base will increase rapidly. This increase in the sales will not only give you a financial gain but also build an interest and reputation of your brand thanks to the recent trends of blogs and online reviews and of course word of mouth that spreads like fire in the consumer market.

Improve the page rank - With more visitors, greater sales volume, the importance of your site is improved significantly. With this improving reputation at the online world, your site is all set for a top ranking for longer period of time that will result is a sharper increase in the brand value.

Be consistent in your SEO objectives - With a consisting ranking at the leading search engine result pages, you create a long lasting and strong influence on the mind of your customers. This will guarantee the brand loyalty of the customers. Therefore, it is important that instead of one time SEO campaign to take a long time program for your SEO initiative that will definitely contribute to your brand equity.

Brighten your online image - Online reputation management that is the buzz in the present context can be successfully done with the help of SEO. By providing better ranking of pro brand sites and eventually lowering the ranks of the ‘boycott’ or ‘flame’ sites you can achieve better brand management through SEO.

Remove Complaints to Protect Your Online Reputation Author MarketNet.

Do you know where you stand in the eyes of your target audience? Some business owners do. Some don’t. Even the ones that are aware don’t always put any PR initiatives into action.

Here’s the rub. Even if your company doesn’t focus on Web-related marketing, you can still lose business from what’s being said about you online. Hence, it pays to monitor your online reputation regardless of your level of Web involvement.

But you’re here, reading this post, which means you understand the need for some level of online marketing (almost no one stumbles onto a blog accidentally). If you’re savvy enough to pursue online marketing, you have probably already used or have considered using a PR firm at one time or another. You’re trying to get mentions in newspapers, magazines, radio, and television. Excellent. But that’s not enough.

The Internet is the one place where what is published is permanent. One slip up, and mentions/complaints are available for all to see FOREVER. Traditional PR initiatives are great and extremely useful for broadcasting positive messages to the masses. But they don’t solve the more permanent issue of web forum, blog, IM, and article complaints online.

Imagine an ex-employee or ex-customer who slipped through the cracks and holds a grudge. They write a blog post or forum topic blasting a product or service, or they outright accuse your company of dealing unethically. They click “Submit” and it’s published. There for all to see.

Imagine dozens, maybe hundreds, of potential customers who read that accusation online. Do they dare risk their time, energy, and money on you, a company of ill-repute? Not likely. Chalk up another lost opportunity. Traditional PR campaigns simply can’t reach that person at the point of negative impact.

Enter online reputation management. The terminology hasn’t yet become as mainstream as traditional PR related terms, but there are dozens of reputation management companies, specialists, and services working every day to monitor and manage corporate reputations online.

What does a reputation manager do?

A reputation manager typically provides a combination of SEO (search engine optimization) and SMO (social media optimization) focused on your brand names, product names, corporate names, executives’ names, etc. Any word or phrase that is associated with your company that could be searched for is included. Essentially, a reputation manager or reputation management service helps you monitor the Web for negative comments and affords you the opportunity to quickly respond and avoid a widespread crisis.

Most corporate reputation crises occur because the company took too long to respond or didn’t respond at all. The rule of thumb is to never assume that a crisis will just blow over or “go away”. You’ve likely spent a sizable amount on branding your company and/or product. Reputation Management is too fundamental to any company’s success to ignore or save for a rainy day. A potential crisis can break across the Web quickly, and when it rains, it pours.

Personal Branding Is Not Just For Products, Brand Yourself

ReputationProfessor.Com Personal Branding author Todd Ash.

Authentic personal branding: Most buying decisions are based on trust, confidence, and emotions people have related to a product, service, or person. Branding is more important than marketing and sales. Branding is influencing, by creating a brand identity that associates certain perceptions and feelings with that identity. Everyone has a Personal Brand but most people are not aware of this and do not manage this strategically, consistently, and effectively. You should take control of your brand and the message it sends and affect how others perceive you. This will help you to actively grow and distinguish yourself as an exceptional professional.

Most traditional personal branding concepts focus mainly on personal marketing, image building, selling, packaging, outward appearances, promoting yourself, and becoming famous, which can turn into an ego trip and let you be perceived as egocentric and selfish. They define personal branding from a personal marketing (selling) point of view. Personal branding is more than just marketing and promoting yourself.

Personal branding is the new holy grail of marketing. Whereas superior skills, great resources and inside knowledge at one time gave you a competitive advantage, now they are merely prerequisites if you even hope to compete in today’s competitive marketplace.

To the chagrin of the purists out there, skills, resources and knowledge have become mere commodities. Because your personal brand is uniquely about you, it will never become a commodity. Personal branding is also critically important because statistics overwhelming show people buy personalities and ideas long before they buy products/services. The trend is unmistakable. Those with the best personal brands win.

Personal branding is also not an option. Everyone has one; your current personal brand is either positive, negative or neutral. The challenge for most professionals is that they lack the discipline necessary to define their personal brands. As a result, their peers select it for them. Unfortunately, the personal brand others select for you will not always be the personal brand you would have selected for yourself.

Love is an important element in this Personal Branding equation. It is about loving yourself (self-love), loving others, and loving what you do. You should love yourself in at least equal measure to others or things. This can be found in most religions: to love others as you love yourself. Without knowing who you are (self-knowledge), it’s very difficult to love yourself and others. You need to make a positive emotional connection with yourself and find yourself interesting first, otherwise others you will not make a positive emotional connection with you and will not find you interesting. With an authentic Personal Brand, your strongest characteristics, attributes, and values can separate you from the crowd. Without this, you look just like everyone else.

It’s a way of clarifying and communicating what makes you different and special and using those qualities to separate from yourself from your peers so that you can greatly expand your success. Personal branding is the strategy behind the world’s most successful people. It is the difference between an ordinary career or business and an exceptional one.

You learn how to apply the principles of personal branding to your own practice so that you stand out among the ever-increasing number of coaches and career management professionals. This enables you differentiate your practice and greatly expand your success.

Branding isn’t just for products, services, and companies any more. There is a new trend called personal branding. Personal branding is essential to career development and is an effective career tool because it helps define who you are, what do you stand for, and what makes you unique, special, and different. Personal branding is also essential to business development. People want to do business with people they know or with whom they feel some sort of connection. If you are a familiar and consistent presence, they will have the sense that they know you and are more receptive to doing business with you.

Traditional personal branding works in the same way as company branding; communicating values, personality, and ability to its audience to produce a positive emotional response. You can shape the market’s perception of your personal brand simply by defining your unique strengths, values, and personality, sharing it with others in an exciting, persuasive manner, and cultivating your brand continuously. It’s something that you can develop and manage, which is essential for future employability and success.

Everyone should take the responsibility to learn, improve, build up their skills and be a strong brand. It’s time to make an effort to discover your genius and authentic dream, imagining and developing yourself as a powerful, consistent, and memorable personal brand.

Your image reflects on your company, friends, and family. You, however, need to be accountable to yourself first. If you’re dancing on the tables at the bar, and worried about getting caught, either you have something personally wrong, or you need to find a different job that accepts your lack of inhibition. If your Facebook photos might get you in trouble, take them down, or decide you want to work at a place where they don’t care about that sort of thing.

Your personal brand is a critical asset in today’s online, virtual, and individual age. Having a good professional reputation is the key to success. Personal branding is becoming increasingly essential to personal success. It’s therefore important to be your own brand in order to be successful in life.

The image of your brand is a perception held in someone else’s mind. Successful personal branding also entails managing this perception effectively. Your personal brand is the expectations, image, and perceptions it creates in the minds of others, when they see or hear your name.

If you ignore this law, you will create mixed signals, and confusion, and all your efforts at branding will go to waste. Because the message you’re actually sending might not be the one you designed, but the one that the public picks up on in your tone and in your attitude and in your actions.

The authentic personal branding concept is durable and less cosmetic than current methods. It places more emphasis on personal development, growth in life and empowerment, and focuses on the human side of branding. Traditional personal branding approaches can turn into an ego trip.
